Introduction

Dr. Xiao is the full Professor in Chemical Engineering at UNB. Prof. Xiao was elected to the Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering in June 2015.
Prof. Xiao’s key research interests include the modification of cellulose fibres, functional polymers and nanoparticles for environmental friendly materials and biocomposites, cellulose-based smart materials. Prof. Xiao has enjoyed high reputation internationally in the areas of antimicrobial/antimould polymers and nanoparticles for cellulose-based products, enhancing barrier properties for green-based packaging materials and green-based bioadsorbents and hydrogels.
Prof. Xiao has attracted substantial research funding from various recourses, including Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF). To date Dr. Xiao has published over 350 scientific papers along with about 20 patent applications. Among them, over 280 are SCI peer-reviewed journal papers with high impact in relevant areas. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Xiao had been actively involved in the research supported by NSERC Strategic Networks. He was the Theme leader for both Sentinel-Bioactive Paper Network and Innovative Green Wood Fibre Products Network, responsible for surface chemistry/antimicrobial polymer Theme and chemical modification of fibre Theme, respectively. He was the member of NSERC Grant Selection Committee (GSC) for Chemical Engineering and Materials from 2007-2010 and 2012; and NSERC RTI committee from 2014 to 2018.
Prof. Xiao has demonstrated the excellent track record in training high-qualified personnel (HQPs). He has supervised or co-supervised more than 35 Ph.D. students and approximately 20 postdoctoral fellows (PDF). He has made substantial contributions to various journals as Editors or reviewers. Currently Prof. Xiao is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts, Editors for Polymers and International Journal of Polymer Science. He was an Associate Editor of Journal of Environmental Informatics from 2011 to 2014.
